Website Design | Advice And Prices
Getting a new website design can be a daunting or easy project depending on your goals and objectives. Websites have become more popular as time goes by and are basically why the Yellow pages (books) became redundant and moved online.
I have been in the Online Business for over 10 years and we are one of the top marketing companies in Durban but it still amazes me how it has evolved especially with the next wave of video and then voice search stamping it’s dominance in the online arena. (PS. We do video production for the web).
As South Africans we are slower to adopt the technology changes, but in time we will see these changes in our business and everyday life on a much higher scale.
Nowadays you have dozens of online directories providing people with the business information they need in an online format. They eliminate the need for a Website Design but come with the challenges of limited info and competing with every other listed business on the directory. However, they are still a great resource to list or advertise your business and it helps to get listed as google gives your points for it. See some of the top South African Business Directory sites below and list your business:
Another must do is to setup a “Google My Business” page so that customers can find you online.

Why do I need a Website
The most common reason for a Website Design service from a Digital Agency or Website Designer would be to have an online presence for your business. As a business owner or freelancer you need to understand that a website is not just an asset but a Sales Rep. helping grow your business 24/7. Just lucky for you they don’t take lunch breaks or sick leave every now and then.
And yes, you should have a website whether you’re a small business and saying your customers don’t go online is further from the truth. Don’t wait too long as you may find out they moved to your competition because they were online. It also has advantages of showing clients your office times, contact details and location. I just remembered the other excuse, “my clients don’t go computers”. Do they have a phone? Then, they definitely online with google and social media.
Just because they don’t use a computer doesn’t mean they not online.
If you want to survive and thrive in today’s market then getting your business online is a must. Just think of the customer’s journey these days before they make a purchase as another reason :
- They think of something I want to buy
- Hop onto google and search for the product and service
- Compare prices and companies online
- Possible go into store once I know the product
- Then make a purchase.
- Share it with friends socially online

How do I get a Website
There are different ways to get a website, so let’s explore some of these options.
There is the free option using a company like Wix to get your online presence up quickly without much effort. The way it works is that they own the software and you can edit it and make changes that they allow and pay them a monthly fee for hosting your site. As a startup business this is not such a bad idea when funds are low and friends are few.
Wix does have a free plan, but only if you use a Wix subdomain (e.g., yourwebsite.wix.com). This will mean you also display Wix ads and have limited functionality. To use a custom domain and have full functionality, you have pay for a premium plan.
Starting off at just under R100 per month, it’s ok if you have clients that you provide your domain and they go online to see your business gallery etc.. If you want to get more clients then this would not be the best option.
Web Design Agency
If you are small to medium sized business running for more than a year then getting the expertise of a professional Website Designer would be advisable. They will ensure your website is branded, meets your requirements and will be acceptable to google to ensure you rank.
What I have noticed with a lot of website designs is that the designer did not explain that the website design is only half the project, you must ensure that the website is optimized so clients can find you and you get leads from it. Check this with them before signing up.
If you have a well-designed website that is well marketed via search engine optimization on a monthly basis then you should see the traffic/clients visiting your site increasing steadily every year. This is the major benefit of Digital Marketing – your website is marketed to the online community getting your business so that you have a return on your investment.
A professionally designed website price ranges from R4,000 to +R30,000 depending on your requirements and type of website(Online Store, Directory, Portal etc.). Search for the best professional to ensure your objectives are more. If they cannot agree on KPI’s, then stay away.
SEO prices start from around R3000 per month to around R15000 for large businesses. It may seem a lot but when you think this service should bring you 3-10 clients per month then you see the ROI and justification. Also take into consideration you have that client for a long period of time. Therefore paying R3,000 and signing up 3 clients at R2,000 each you made your money back.
Once your website is designed then you will need to host it. You can choose to host it with the Website Design company or host it on your own using a hosting provider in South Africa or Internationally. It’s a good idea to ensure you use the email with your hosting i.e. firstname.lastname@example.org. You are paying for this service. If you are concerned about your Gmail account emails, simply forward all emails from Gmail to this new email address. You just come across as more professional if you have a branded email address.
That’s it folks just pop me an email if you need any further information or advice.
